DINING OUT
Rome has a lot of characterful restaurants, from the simplest osterias to the most elegant one, but, if possible, avoid the “ tourist restaurants”.
Typical dishes are "spaghetti alla carbonara" (spaghetti with bacon and parmesan cheese), "bucatini all’amatriciana" (thick spaghetti with tomato and chilli sauce), "stracciatella" (soup with egg and cheese), "carciofi alla romana" (artichokes stuffed with garlic and herbs), "saltimbocca" (veal escalopes with ham and sage).
There are some good pizzerias and trattorias in Trastevere and Testaccio. The Frascati, Genazzano, Colli Albani, Colli Lanuvini, Marino, Montecompatri, Zagarolo, Velletri wines will be an ideal accompaniment to your meal.
SHOPPING
Rome is known for its leather, jewellery, silks and shoes; Via Condotti and the streets off Piazza di Spagna offer the top designer labels, such as Bulgari, Armani and Versace.
You can find a wide selection of shops on Via del Corso and Via Nazionale.
Rome’s most famous flea market is the antique Porta Portese (on Sunday), while a delightful flower and vegetable market is the market in the beautiful Piazza Campo dei Fiori.
